Tamiya Ryoko is one of the worst teachers ever and one of the best teachers ever.
Aside from obligatory plot reasons, at first it struck me as odd that Tamiya Ryoko had chosen a teacher as her undercover job. Granted, she wanted to at least try to learn how to fit in with humans, but there are plenty of public relations jobs out there that could have fit the bill. But then the show started to imply that she would become a mentor to Shinichi in a different way, showing him how to control his powers while they faced down a common enemy for the time being.
The show didn’t play out that way, but ultimately Tamiya Ryoko’s role was one of education. She introduced one of the more important concepts in the series, showing that the parasites could in fact display human qualities. She teaches Shinichi that their existence isn’t only a one-sided threat to humans and that he is not the only one with special circumstances. It also hits at one of the core themes in the series: the power of a mother’s love.
The result is one of the most powerful moments in the show, as well as a wake-up call to Shinichi. While Tamiya Ryoko wasn’t a teacher in the traditional sense, she did teach Shinichi some things about what it means to really be human.
Too bad the show just kind of forgot about the baby |
