No matter which universe these characters are in, Jean’s love life is the butt of the joke.
This was played off hysterically, and I loved every minute of it. I’m not a huge fan of Jean, but I have enjoyed seeing his character growth in the main series so it was a lot of fun to sheets earlier personality parodied. At the beginning of the main series, Jean had a pretty big ego that was easily bruised by Eren’s proximity to Mikasa, so it makes sense that Junior High Jean would be touchy on the subject of relationships and his lack of one.
And while showing up to school with a ridiculous hairstyle only to brag about how he got a love letter was pretty funny, for me the highlight of the episode was when Jean was fantasizing about nearly every female character in the show being in love with him.

Friendly reminder that Junior High Annie is adorable |
However, Annie stole the show this week as the assumed author of the letter, as giving a bit of a sneak preview of what it’ll look like when the Mikasa/Eren/Annie love triangle kicks in (if this adaptation is planning on covering it, that is). It was cute play on tropes, and I love seeing the different take on the character in a non-life-threatening situation.
Annie's Titan scream also got the biggest laugh from me this week |
In the end, I felt more sorry for the Moe Titan than I did for Jean. He could’ve let her down a bit more easily. At least he has his friends to back him up—
Or not. |
Even in Jean's daydreams, they're still lesbians |
