After all this time, the show is finally giving us a proper introduction to Yuina.

With most of the stereotypical beach-episode cliches out of the way within the first couple minutes, the episode quickly moves its focus to Yuina, who despite her spots in the promotional artwork and both OPs has been playing the secondary character until this point. In one of my earlier posts, I pointed out that the scene from episode five with Yuina in the massage chair really showed the differences between her and Ohana, despite the both of them being granddaughters of inn managers. This episode brings some of the focus back to those differences, with Yuina admitting that she doesn't want to spend her life running an inn. This statement isn't particularly surprising--everything that has been shown of Yunia so far has made it clear that she has no interest in learning how to manage an inn--but the overall message that a person can only give it their all when they enjoy what they do was a good point to make.

Not that I think that Yuina is exactly suffering in her position. Although she does come off slightly too cutesy for my taste, she's definitely not the spoiled ojou-sama archetype. I'm glad that this episode didn't take the melodramatic path ("Woe is me, I'm being forced into a marriage and a profession that I don't want!") and instead made it a question of drive. I'm assuming that the next episode will get into what Yuina really does want to do, her "do what I feel like" attitude will probably be a point of contention next episode. If she doesn't want to run an inn (which is fine, no hard feelings) then what does she want to do? And does she have the same kind of drive for that "something" that Ohana and Yuina's fiance have for running an inn?

Another interesting factor that this episode brought up was how people passionate about a certain job expect others around them to also be passionate. Yuina's fiance made the mistake of expecting part-timers to have the same level of dedication as full-timers. In turn, Ohana was at first shocked by efficiency of the inn and then by the apathy of the workers. The characters are wrapped up in the little micro-world that is running an inn, and despite the hard work, they are enjoying themselves, so it shocks them when Yuina wants out. It looks like the next episode is going to continue on this question of drive, and I'm looking forward to seeing what made Yuina decide she wants to pursue a different career path.

  1. I don't think it's that most people expect those around them to be passionate about their jobs, I just think that Yosuke was naive and inexperienced about everything. He just assumed that all of them would be like that...which they weren't.

  2. That's kinda what I was trying to get at--the assumption that everyone is just as passionate, and Yosuke learned the hard way that it just isn't true.
