12 Days of Anime Teachers--#9: Saitama
Sometimes the best teachers are the ones who have no idea what they are doing.
I’ve loved One Punch Man this past season for it’s superhero parody moments, unique characters, and amazing animation. But some of the things that I’ve loved the most have to be Saitama crashing and burning his way through being Genos’s “sensei,” even though he never wanted to be his teacher in the first place.
The result is Saitama saying some genuinely profound things while admitting to himself internally that he has no clue what he is talking about. It’s also an excellent summary of how I felt the entire time I was student teaching.
That said, I still count Saitama as a good teacher even though he has no clue what to tell Genos since his own path to becoming a hero was simple with surprising results. He inspires Genos to keep improving himself and to set higher goals, which is what any good teacher or role model should do!
So congrats to Saitama on showing some good teacher sense with his robot protege. Even if it was completely unintentional. Also, he got Genos out of his Naruto Run phase, which makes him a Teacher of the Year Nominee at the very least.
