Attack on Titan Junior High Episode 4--Wax On, Wax Off

This week on Attack on Titan Junior High: the 3DMG is now a cleaning device!

This bit played it pretty close to the manga version, with some obvious reference shots from the trainee arc thrown in for good measure. The way the 3DMG is retconned into this timeline is pretty ridiculous—previous junior high students built this complicated piece of machinery for the express purpose of cleaning the wall—but everything about this spinoff if ridiculous, so it doesn’t stand out too much.

This episode also starts to get into two of things that I found most amusing about this spinoff when I first read the manga: one, the Titans taking the role of all-around jerks, and two, side characters from the series being fleshed out in funny ways. Rico didn’t get to much screen time in either the anime or the manga, but here she gets to play senpai with the main cast of characters, whipping them into shape through cleaning exercises before letting them handle the 3DMG.

And why do they need to clean the wall in the first place? Because the Titans tag it! The show hasn’t used the Titans too much since the first episode, although they were a near-omnipresent bullying force in the manga. The show has made a few references to that, but the series has yet to adapt a lot of the scenes that showed the Titans being jerks just for the sake of being jerks.
