Charlotte First Impressions--A Dumber Lelouch

I feel like a lot of anime series go out of their way to make their unlikable leads likable, so it’s pretty refreshing to have a series that says, “Yeah, this guy is a jerk. He’s getting what’s coming to him, though.”

His fall from power was the best part of the episode for me for that reason. I found his antics pretty funny up until the point that he put multiple people in mortal danger just to impress the girl that he liked. If you have to save a girl from getting run over by a car to get her to talk to you, you might not be a good match for her. Hearing her say towards the end of the episode that she was grateful, but yeah, it’s not going to work out, was brilliant and something I wish that anime would do more often.

I also love that each of the superpowers presented so far have some kind of major flaw that prevents jerks like our lead from attempting to take over the world or trying something else equally ridiculous. I imagine that the show will continue to poke fun at that. Jun Maeda’s works are pretty hit-and-miss with me, but if the rest of the show lives up to this first episode then this one will be a keeper.

Please please please don't have a "twist" where the girl from the first episode was pining after him the entire time, that is such a worn-out trope
