Dropped: Gifuu Doudou!!: Kanetsugu to Keiji--You're Already Bored

I couldn't even get halfway through the third episode, which I take as a pretty good sign I should stop watching a show.

There's an interesting premise here, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired because...nothing really happens in this show. The characters sit around and talk about people and events without giving me a reason why I should care about them, and accomplish nothing in the meantime. There's nothing wrong with a show that has characters do nothing but throw dialogue at each other (I mean, look at the Monogatari series), but this show forgets to make it interesting. Apparently, being "eccentric" and "righteous"--the words used to describe the two main leads--means standing on the sidelines, drinking sake and laughing, while more interesting things happen around you. When they do accomplish something, it's usually just that one thing before it's back to the status quo. And that makes for a boring show.

The plot (using the word loosely here) is told in flashback, so we already know from the beginning that whatever happens to the main characters will work itself out. Because of this, it falls on the story to create some other source of drama or to just make their reminiscing so interesting that the viewer has to keep watching. The show chooses to do neither of these things. The point where I dropped the show was when the characters decided to rehash--again--the time when Kanetsugu shot an arrow almost into Kaiji's face during a battle. He was standing on a cliff face a long ways away. Sounds cool right? Not the way this show tells it, going into excruciating detail over the exact moment, completely glossing over the fact that they should be paying more attention to the larger battle. The second rehash supposedly tells it from a different perspective, but it adds absolutely nothing because the lines and the animation are all the same.

I didn't even have to wonder why the show was wasting five minutes of my time playing the exact same scene it had shown in the previous episode, because it clearly does not have a great budget. The OP is static manga art (the best looking thing in the entire show) and a clip show of scenes from the episode. Panning shots are everywhere. The characters barely move. The design also has a serious case of sameface (it's not just for badly budgeted moe shows anymore!) and if it weren't for the ridiculous anime hairstyles, I wouldn't be able to tell anyone apart.

There was one interesting thing in the show that I wanted to know more about: one of the characters can summon a Nen tiger ala Hunter x Hunter while the other one has some weird deity thing hanging over his shoulder. However, the one time the show decided to address this through a side character, another side character who came out of nowhere threatened to kill him if he brought it up again. I'm not waiting around for 26 episodes to see if the show decides to stop talking about that one time Kanetsugu shot an arrow to see if it'll actually get a plot together. If a show is going out of its way to stifle conversation on the one thing I'm interested in, then I'm not going to watch it anymore. I'm dropping it and I'm not looking back.
