Maoyu (Maoyuu Maou Yuusha) First Impressions--BOOBS! Now That I Have Your Attention...

If it would drop the thirteen-year-old obsession with mammaries, then we might have something.

It starts out like every generic fantasy story you've ever heard: the Hero storms the Demon King's castle alone, determined to kill him and end the war that's taken so many human lives. However, the Hero doesn't find what he expected... The Demon King is actually a she, and she informs him that the war is not so black and white as he was led to believe. The war is something that was perpetuated for economic reasons, since without it, the stability of the central nations would collapse. Also, she has a huge rack. Only in anime, amiright?

Since I am a straight female, the boobs did nothing for me but make me worry about her back. I'm not sure how much of the bouncing is because this is being animated by Arms or because this story originated on 2chan. Also, the hero's reaction to the boobs (yelling, blushing) is something that we've all seen a million times before, so it wins no points in the fanservice originality department on this front. It's also played for laughs, which doesn't work thanks to the cliche.

Everything else I found pretty interesting. The Spice and Wolf comparison does seem to be accurate beyond the staff and voice actors; the majority of the episode revolved around the conversation with the Hero and the Demon King, which briefly touched on economics and then went into the politics of the world and even food distribution. The Hero's world is clearly of generic medieval stock while the way the Demon King talks suggests that they're much more technologically advanced even though all we see of their kingdom is the palace. For example, early on the Demon King mentions pollution, and the Hero has no idea what she's talking about. There's also a pretty cool lamp that can replay memories, although it's left ambiguous whether this is technology that the demons have or just straight-up magic.

Overall, this feels like a very interesting world we've stepped into, and I love political intrigue and fantasy, so if that does continue to take the majority of the focus, then I'm sold. It's too bad that the show feels the need to throw in fanservice at the get go, but I can tolerate it at it's current level. So far, there's nothing to cause a huge amount of concern that this will prove unworthy of the hype.

  1. It is among one of the more anticipated anime out this winter due to it's premise alone. So I've found it strange as well that they had to resort to fanservicing in order to try to hook viewers. Hopefully, they'll knock it off and focus on the story and the journey of the Demon Queen & Hero.

  2. That's why I'm unsure whether it's the source material or if Arms really can't help themselves. And I'm also hoping for more journey, less boob.
