School is getting out, the Class of 2011 is graduating, and the summer season of anime is just around the corner! Continuing on a pretty good year of anime so far, this season has something for everyone with a wide group of shows. So, what to watch?
Disclaimer: The following thoughts are my own opinion and are based on the information available so far. Feel free to agree or disagree with me, but do not make attacks based solely on a difference in opinion.
Shows
Appleseed XIII
Genres: Action, Mecha, Sci-Fi, Military, Police
Synopsis: Appleseed takes place in the 22nd century, after the non-nuclear Third World War decimates the Earth. Deunan, a young female warrior, and Briareos, a veteran cyborg-soldier, are both partners and lovers. As members of E.S.W.A.T., the elite special forces serving Olympus, they are deployed whenever trouble strikes.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: I haven't heard much about the manga, but the premise looks decent. I'll definitely give it a shot if it gets streamed.
Natsume Yuujinchou San
Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Shoujo, Slice of Life, Supernatural
Synopsis: Third season of Natsume Yuujinchou. Since he was young, a teenage boy named Natsume Takashi has been able to see spirits, but keeping this ability a secret has now become a heavy burden for him and has made his life difficult.This begins to change when Takashi inherits his grandmother's "Book of Friends". He discovers that she, Natsume Reiko, shared the same ability as him and starts to understand why he was always targeted by both good and bad spirits. After learning the true meaning behind the Book of Friends, which allows him to manipulate the spirits listed within its pages, Takashi undertakes a journey with his bodyguard, the infamous spirit Madara, to free the spirits of their contracts with Reiko.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: I've watched the first two seasons, and I'm super excited about this one. A must-watch for me.
Mayo Chiki!
Genres: Comedy, Romance, School
Synopsis:Konoe Subaru, 17, has been serving as the butler of Suzutsuki Kanade in school, a classmate of Sakamachi Kinjirou. Due to an accident, Sakamachi discovers Subaru's secret... that he's actually a girl!? Apparently she will be removed from her position if anyone at school finds out. What will unfold from this chain of events?
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: Hmm... I do like comedies involving traps... But the promo image isn't inspiring confidence... I'll wait and see what others have to say before deciding on this one.
The iDOLM@STER
Genres: Music
Synopsis: Adaptation of the Xbox 360 game that follows the career of a producer who works for the fictional integrated 756 Production and 961 Production and has to work with a selection of 13 pop idols.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: If this gets streamed, I might watch it for laughs, but I don't expect much from it.
Blood-C
Genres: Action, Mystery, Drama, Horror, Vampire, Supernatural
Synopsis: New Blood anime, a collaboration between Production IG and CLAMP.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: I haven't watched the other Blood productions (which is apparently not a problem, since this is a whole new thing), but I'm watching this one for two big reasons: CLAMP character designs and Nana Mizuki. A must-watch for those reasons.
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni!
Genres: Comedy, Romance, School, Super Power
Synopsis: Sequel to the first season.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: The first season was hysterical, and I expect the second one to be so as well, especially after the long delay. I'm hoping that this will be worth waiting for.
Usagi Drop
Genres: Slice of Life, Josei
Synopsis: Going home for his grandfather's funeral, thirty-year-old bachelor Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover! The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin. In a fit of angry spontaneity, Daikichi decides to take her in himself! But will living with this overgrown teenager of man help Rin come out of her shell? And hang on, won't this turn of events spell doom for Daikichi's love life?
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: A Noitamina production of a great manga? Must-watch.
No. 6
Genres: Sci-Fi
Synopsis: The story takes place in the ideal city "NO.6" in 2013. Shion was judged as having "highest-ranked intelligence" when he was two years old and was allowed to live in the luxurious area "Cronos". On his twelfth birthday, he met a beautiful boy called "Nezumi," who had escaped from a reformatory. Shion protected him, but the Public Security Bureau deprived Shion of all his privileges and expelled him from Cronos to "Lost Town". Four years after the banishment, a mysterious accident leads Shion to the secret of the city NO.6.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: I love distopian future storylines. Definitely getting a watch if it's streamed.
Ikoku Meiro no Croisée
Genres: Historical, Slice of Life, Seinen
Thoughts/Synopsis: The story takes place in the second half of the 19th century, as Japanese culture gains popularity in the West. A young Japanese girl, Yune, accompanies a French traveller, Oscar, on his journey back to France, and offers to help at the family's ironwork shop in Paris. Oscar's nephew and shop-owner Claude reluctantly accepts to take care of Yune, and we learn how those two, who have so little in common, get to understand each other and live together in the Paris of the 1800s.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: I'm not sure what's seinen about this, but I've fallen in love with Takeda's character designs while watching Gosick which is a good enough reason for me to give this series a look.
Itsuka Tenma no Kuro-Usagi
Genres: Comedy, Horror, Romance, Vampire, Supernatural, Seinen
Synopsis: Taito has been really sleepy lately, and keeps dreaming of a female vampire who says she has given him her "poison." Sometimes he even thinks he hears her voice when he's awake. But after surviving an accident that should have killed him, Taito's world changes drastically and he realizes that his dreams are more real than he thought.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: *reads first line of synopsis* *facepalms* Isn't this from the author of Legend of the Legendary Heroes? Shouldn't he be focusing on giving that series a proper ending rather than creating what sounds like a weak vampire series? Absolutely not watching.
Nekogami Yaoyorozu
Genres: Comedy, Supernatural, Seinen
Synopsis:Koyama Yuzu is running an antique shop. Mayu, a cat god (nekogami), is living off Yuzu and leads an idle life playing games. Lots of other gods visit Mayu and enjoy merrymaking.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: Again, no idea how this is seinen. It looks cute, but nothing about it is really grabbing me, and I've already got comedy and supernatural covered in other shows I want to watch this season. I'll pass, unless it ends up to be something awesome.
R-15
Genres: Comedy, Romance, School, Harem
Synopsis: Akutagawa Takuto is a teenage porn novel writer. He enters Hirameki Gakuen, which accepts only geniuses with outstanding talent. He leads his classmates with his porn skills to win the interclass competition.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: At first I thought that this sounded hilarious, but then I found out that it's coming from the director of KissxSis. I'm not watching it for that reason.
Dantalian no Shoka
Genres: Fantasy
Synopsis: Hugh Anthony Disward inherits an old mansion and a personal library from his grandfather. In the basement of the mansion, he meets a mysterious girl Dalian. She is a Dantalian and a gateway to "Dantalian's bookshelf", which stores the prohibited books of the demons. "Gensho (Illusory Books)", the prohibited books, endanger the balance of the world but people are fascinated by the taboo. Huey and Dalian solve the cases involving Gensho with their ability to access the Dantalian's bookshelf.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: On the one hand, it sounds like the stereotypical plot premise for a harem show or something similar. On the other hand, it's being made by Ganiax, who consistently make awesome shows. They haven't let me down yet, so I'm sticking around to see what they do with this one.
Nurarihyon no Mago: Sennen Makyou
Genres: Action, Demons, Shounen, Supernatural
Synopsis: Rikuo Nura appears to be an average high-school kid. No one knows that he comes home everyday to a house full of the once fearsome yokai of legend, nor that at night, Nura transforms into the all powerful leader of these spirits. However, much to the disappointment of -well- everyone, Rikuo is determined to live as normal a life as possible.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: Didn't watch the first season.
Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel
Genres: Magical Girl
Synopsis: Haruka Minazuki and Aoi Kannazuki are freshman high school students and best friends. During the day they help with school activities but at night they thwart enemies like Black Auction and other villains as Red Angel and Blue Angel, the Twin Angel team.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: Too bad that this show has to share the same year with Madoka, since it looks like it's back to the generic formula. As a fan of the genre I'll give it a shot, but I'm not expecting more than the norm.
Blade
Genres: Action
Synopsis: Madhouse's adaption of the BLADE Marvel comics.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: I haven't heard good things about the other Marvel adaptations, so there's not much to show that this one will be any different. Pass.
Kamisama Dolls
Genres: Action, Drama, Supernatural, Seinen
Synopsis: Kyouhei, after moving away to Tokyo from his old town to get away from the events that happened, is on a goukon with his friends, including his old neighbor, Shiba. After drinking for a whole night, he and Shiba discover a dead, bloody body in the elevator. He is told by his younger sister, Utao with her Kamisama Doll, that Aki, an old friend, and his Doll are the culprits responsible.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: The promo image is misleading; the trailer that's come out for this series showcases a dark theme with action sequences and murder. Add supernatural elements and you've got me interested.
Sacred Seven
Genres: Action, School
Synopsis: A "new school battle action" project by Sunrise. The tagline is "People's memories change the world!"
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: Sunrise mecha series. I'm not a huge fan of mecha, so I'm giving this a pass.
Kami-sama no Memo-chou
Genres: Mystery
Synopsis: Based on the light novel written by Sugii Hikaru, with illustrations by Kishida Mel. Narumi is an assistant to detective Alice, a NEET teenage girl who stays in her pajamas and operates within her bedroom. She uses her vast network of people and the internet to solve cases. Will Alice be able to solve them in her PJs?
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: A NEET Sherlock Holmes... Sounds interesting. I'll need something to fill the gap that Gosick will leave behind. Definitely giving this one a look.
Ro-Kyu-Bu!
Genres: Comedy, School, Sports
Synopsis: Hasegawa Subaru is a high school boy who loves basketball. He joins the male basketball team but due to problems with the team captain (a suspected lolicon) he has to resign. With no place to go he ends up coaching the female team of the elementary school. How will he and the other girls cope with the various troubles and trials that will come their way? Based on the light novel by Aoyama Sagu.
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: I'm not sure what to think of this one. Romance and ecchi aren't in the genres, and the trailer seems innocent enough, but the fact that they even mention lolicon makes me pause, even if it isn't from the main character. I'll wait and see on this one.
Manyuu Hikenchou
Genres: Action, Ecchi
Synopsis: It is currently the Taiheimeji Era. It is a reign ruled by the Tokugawa shogunate. Inside this shogunate, there is a group of warriors that support the government. They are the Manyuu Clan. In this current era, breasts mean everything. If you have breasts, you are guaranteed wealth and popularity. If you lack them, you are rarely considered “human”. Members of the Manyuu Clan help raise the future big breasts. Written on a secret scroll possessed by the clan, there is said to be various techniques on how to grow big and beautiful breasts. Chifusa is to be successor of the clan. However, she takes the secret scroll and runs away with it, hoping to fight against the cruel world that the Manyuu Clan has created…
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: LOLOLOL THAT SYNOPSIS. But I'm not going to watch it. Ecchi fans can have their fun with this one.
Uta no Prince-sama--Maji Love 1000%
Genres: Comedy, Romance, School, Shoujo, Harem
Synopsis: Nanami Haruka wants to be a song writer, so she attends an idol training school filled with beautiful bishounen. The school pairs each aspiring songwriter with an aspiring idol, but Haruka finds herself paired with 3 idols! To make things more difficult, Nanami is also not allowed to date any of her beautiful partners!
Thoughts/Will I watch it?: B... Bishounen... everywhere... must watch... despite stereotypical premise...
