Hanasaku Iroha Episode 11--Five Out of Ten

The title is the rating for Ohana's day, not for the episode itself, which was great. There are also less screencaps in this post than usual, since I'm trying out a new posting style.

It looks like I was wrong about my earlier prediction that the old lady and her daughter being the "mystery guests," but I wasn't expecting Ohana's mother to be the one who wrote the article. In the space of a couple minutes, her character went from a mildly annoying irresponsible mother to a complete jerk. But while I think that Ohana's anger is justified, I wasn't really sure why she was surprised by her mother's actions given her track record until she got into that sad speech about holding everything back for the sake of her mother's job. That specifically was what demoted her mother to jerk status for me. Not only did she basically sabotage her own mother's inn, she's been acting selfish towards her daughter for the sake of a job that she knows is sleazy. Hopefully the woman gets a taste of her own medicine by the end of the series.

And then there's Ko. Like I predicted at the end of the last episode, it doesn't look like they're going to be together. Regardless of what he says, it obvious that he's pretty close to the new girl. The shoe's now on the other foot for Ohana, as she realizes that she may like Ko after all, but that it's probably too late to tell him. Judging by the preview for the next episode, Ohana's not letting this go yet, which is a good thing since it would be pretty sad if they ended it on this note.

But even at the end of her worst day, at least Ohana still has good friends and one other love interest.

Thoughts: Ohana's line at the end, "I've never been moved in so many ways in one day before," is a great way to describe what just happened: this episode ran through a full range of emotions and has been the best that the series has gotten so far. While it was sad to see Ohana at an all-time low, it great to see the series address the problems that it brought up in the first episode, Ohana's mother the biggest among them. It seems like the series is finally picking up steam and I will be very surprised (and disappointed) if there are any more episodes that border on pointless like there were earlier on in the season. Now all we need to know is how the supernatural element that was teased in the previous episode fits into all of this.
